September 12th, 2009: the March on Washington, DC.
Dick Armey’s FreedomWorks.org and the 9-12 project started by Glenn Beck were the inspiration for an amazing number of people to attend a rally on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C.
Well, okay, “on the steps” is a figurative term. Actually we were on the lawn in front of the steps, including the lawn areas stretching beyond Pennsylvania and Maryland Avenues. And filling the parking lots beyond that. And surrounding the reflecting pool in front of the Capitol. And stretching back across the Mall, all the way to the Washington Monument. The numbers vary, depending on your source but checking a USA Today article that reported the National Park Service statistics calculating how many people have attended presidential inaugurations, I feel safe in estimating at least 1 million people. Being in the crowd, it felt like a lot more. You can check out the National Park stats & decide for yourself. You can also see some of our photos from the event here.
This was the largest peaceful rally ever to occur in D.C. There were no arrests. Zero. Not one. After the rally was over, when looking at the grounds and walking back the 1.3 miles of Pennsylvania avenue, there was no litter - except for what was piled around overflowing garbage cans. We saw and met people of all colors, from all walks of life: law-abiding, litter-free folks who are concerned about the direction the most recent administrations have been taking their country. The general consensus is that it’s time to stop and re-evaluate what THE PEOPLE want before any more laws are passed.
The purpose of this rally was to protest Big Government and their out-of-control spending of taxpayer money - with seemingly little oversight. The reason most of us felt compelled to travel to the nation’s capitol is we do not feel as if our voices are being heard or listened to, in fact, we feel ignored when we call and write and e-mail our representatives - recieving only automated responses, if that.
Some of the people who were elected to represent us openly disrespect us, to the point of telling us that what we say does not matter. If we had been respected and listened to in our town hall meetings, if our elected officials would vote in a way that reflect the desires of their constituents, perhaps this would not have been necessary.
I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I am an Independent who votes for candidates whom I believe will use their votes in Congress to protect my freedoms and not saddle me with more taxes or try to take away my freedoms.
My blog theme is entitled “Freedom Chasers.” This is not meant to be a political blog nor will it become one, however, the concept of chasing freedom goes far beyond what I try to share about personal development.
My focus is success principles and philosophies, including goal setting, paradigm shifting, forward momentum, living life by design rather than default. I share how to dig deep into yourself to find the drive, ambition, desire and will to help you be all that you were created to be.
It goes against everything I believe in to stand by and do nothing while there is wanton abuse of governmental powers and the abandonment of constitution limitations. I am not “standing by” any longer, I am taking a stand.
Did the marchers make a difference? I hope so. I believe so. More people are getting involved locally and those local organizations are joining together via the internet. We the People - shifting paradigms, setting goals, and living life by design!
As always I look forward to your feedback and comments.

Thanks for being there and representing the rest of us “litter free” Americans! We love Glen Beck and are so happy to be among the reasonable people who would love to slow down and think a while before leaping.
